Tour of Flanders 4/3/11

Tour of Flanders
For the second year in a row, a specialized bicycle took the win in Belgium.  Of course the motors behind the specialized machine had a changing of the guard from the 2010 race.  The man with the target on his back was Fabian Cancellara who rode for Team Saxo Bank (specialized bicycle) for the win last year.  A new power team, Leopard Trek, formed this year containing the Schleck brothers and also Cancellara.  As Fabian attacked on a climb with about 25 miles remaining, he built up more than a minutes lead with another powerhouse rider, Sylvain Chavanel (Quick Step).  However, the duo lost their lead on another dreadful climb as the riders chasing were thirsty for a change in standings.  After 159.3 miles of racing through spectator packed Belgium towns, coble stone climbs and hills maxing out at a 22% gradiant, the race came down to a three man sprint to the finish between winner and hometown hero, Belgian, Nick Nuyens, and the Cancellara/Chavanel duo.  The Tour of Flanders is the perfect warm up for more excitement to come with the Paris-Roubaix on Sunday, April 10, 2011.  I wonder if Cancellara is wishing he was on the S-works?
